The term deposition refers to a legal process in which a witness provides sworn testimony, usually related to a civil or criminal case. During this procedure, the witness is questioned by both parties' attorneys and must tell the truth under penalty of perjury. The deposition is typically taken outside of court, but it can be used later as evidence if the case goes to trial.
