"Nanoporous" refers to a material or surface that has tiny holes or pores on a very small scale. These pores are so tiny that only molecules of a certain size can pass through them, making the material selective in what it allows to pass.
ALD coatings on nanoporous materials with unimodal feature / pore sizes can also be used to fine tune the pore size of the material. (h2awsm.org)
