The term “queer” is an umbrella term that refers to people who do not conform to traditional gender roles, sexual orientations or identities. It can be used as a self-descriptor by individuals who feel that their gender identity and/or sexual orientation does not fit into the typical binary categories of male and female, or heterosexual and homosexual. The term “queer” is also often used in an political context to describe members of the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, highlighting the shared experiences of marginalization and discrimination faced by those who do not conform to traditional gender roles and sexual orientations.
