The term "rear quarter" refers to one of four sections into which a horse's body is divided for evaluation during judging or competition. These quarters are named after their positions on the animal - the shoulder, hip, rear quarter and rump. The rear quarter is located towards the back of the horse, extending from just behind the ribcage to the hind legs. This area includes the muscles that power the movement of the hind limbs as well as the large gluteal muscles which are responsible for propelling the animal forward during locomotion. The condition and development of these muscles can give an indication of the horse's overall physical fitness, strength and athleticism.
