IDC predicted that the tablet market would recover by 2018, but the fact is that in Q2 2017 the worldwide
tablet shipments declined once again, this time by 3.4 % on a yearly basis.
As previously mentioned, share outside the top 5 continued to outgrow the market, representing 46 % of
total tablet shipments in 2Q15.
Overall, ABI says
tablet shipments grew more than a fifth (23 percent) year - over-year in Q2, while the market declined 17 percent sequentially.
But this is just the beginning for tablets: IDC
expects tablet shipments to surpass desktop PCs in 2013, and portable PCs in 2014.
And the figure is only likely to increase largely: Gigaom Research is forecasting
tablet shipment growth to top 427 million units by 2017 (subscription required).
Meanwhile, IDC reports that the consumer market for tablets is shrinking, with worldwide
tablet shipments falling 5.9 percent in the first quarter of 2015 (see full story here).
IDC
said tablet shipments rose 88.9 percent in the second quarter over the previous quarter to 13.6 million units and by 303.8 percent year over year.
While the overall number of global
tablet shipments saw a decrease, preliminary data shows that the Microsoft Surface and iPad Pro experienced more than 2.9 percent year - over-year growth.
