The term appellate refers to a court or tribunal that hears and reviews cases on appeal from lower courts. In other words, it is an intermediate level court which has the power to review, revise, reverse or affirm the judgments of lower courts based on the evidence presented in those trials. The purpose of appellate jurisdiction is to ensure that justice is administered correctly and consistently by correcting any errors made at the trial stage. Appeal is a process through which an aggrieved party seeks to have a higher court review, modify or reverse the judgment rendered against them in a lower court. The appellate court has the power to consider questions of law and fact, but does not have jurisdiction to hear new evidence that was not presented at the trial stage.
