Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty deposits (plaques) build up inside your arteries. These plaques can narrow or block your arteries, leading to reduced blood flow and increasing the risk for heart attack, stroke, or other serious health problems. Atherosclerosis usually occurs slowly over time and is often caused by a combination of factors such as high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and obesity.
