An atom is a basic unit of matter that consists of protons, neutrons and electrons. It is the smallest constituent unit of ordinary matter that constitutes a chemical element. Atoms are extremely small; typical sizes are around 100 picometers (1×10^−8 meters, a quadrillionth of a meter).
