The term "basolateral" refers to a direction or position that is located on the side of an object, structure, or system that faces away from the main body or bulk. In biological contexts, it often describes a location or orientation relative to a cell membrane, specifically referring to the side of the cell that is not in direct contact with other cells (i.e., the apical surface). Basolateral can also be used more broadly to describe any position or direction that is opposite or contrasting to another, such as basolateral and apical membrane domains within a nephron of the kidney.
