Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata. It is formed from ancient plant remains and contains mainly carbon, but also contains other elements such as hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. Coal is used as a fuel to generate electricity and heat through the process of combustion.
