A coffee table is a low, usually wooden or metal-framed table that is placed in front of a sofa or other seating area. It serves as a surface for placing beverages, books, magazines, remote controls, and other items within easy reach of the people sitting on the couch or chairs. The term "coffee table" comes from the fact that it was originally designed to hold a coffee service during social gatherings in the 19th century. Today, however, the use of a coffee table is much more versatile and can serve as both a functional piece of furniture and an ornamental one.
