Dermal refers to the skin or outer layer of an organism. It is derived from the Greek word “derma” which means skin, and it specifically describes the tough protective membrane that covers the entire body of animals, including humans. This layer consists mainly of keratinocytes, nerve endings, hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, and other structures. The dermis is the middle layer of the skin, beneath the epidermis and above the hypodermis or subcutaneous fat layer. It provides strength, elasticity, and flexibility to the skin, as well as housing various sensory receptors and blood vessels that help regulate body temperature.
