Dry Eye is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eyes. This can result from an imbalance in the production, tear evaporation or drainage of tears. Symptoms include irritation, burning, scratchiness, redness, and watering of the eye. Dry Eye is a common problem that can affect people of all ages, but it becomes more prevalent as we age. It can also be caused by certain medications or medical conditions such as arthritis, lupus, or thyroid disorders. Treatment for dry eyes may include over-the-counter artificial tears, prescription eye drops, or in some cases, surgery to help improve the flow of tears.
