Elder abuse refers to any form of mistreatment, neglect or exploitation experienced by an older adult. This can include physical abuse such as hitting or pushing; sexual abuse; emotional or psychological abuse; financial abuse; and neglect, which is the failure to provide necessary care, including food, shelter, medical care, and protection from harm. Elder abuse can occur in any setting, but it is most commonly perpetrated by family members or caregivers. It is a serious problem that can have devastating physical, emotional, and financial consequences for the victim, as well as long-term impacts on their quality of life.
