A follicle is a small, sac-like structure in the skin that contains a hair. It is part of the larger structure called the pilosebaceous unit, which also includes sebaceous glands and associated blood vessels. Follicles are found all over the body, except for the palms of hands and soles of feet. Each follicle produces one hair during its growth cycle, which lasts between two to six years. At the end of this period, the hair is shed and a new one begins to grow in its place.
