The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located in the upper right part of your abdomen, just below the liver. Its primary function is to store and concentrate bile, which is produced by the liver and used for digestion. When food containing fat enters the small intestine, the gallbladder releases bile into the duodenum through a tube called the common bile duct. Bile helps break down fats and fat-soluble vitamins so they can be absorbed by the body. The gallbladder also plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels, as it stores glucose when blood sugar is high and releases it when blood sugar is low.
