A gladiator is a person who takes part in public spectacles or fights, typically for entertainment. In ancient Rome, gladiators were usually prisoners of war or social outcasts who were trained to fight each other or wild animals in front of large crowds. The practice of using gladiatorial combat as a form of entertainment was widespread from the 3rd century BC until the 4th century AD when it was eventually banned by Emperor Constantine I.
