Goal difference refers to the number of goals scored by a team, minus the number of goals conceded by that same team during a match or series of matches. It is used in soccer and other sports as a way to determine which team has performed better overall, even if they have ended up with an equal number of wins and losses. The goal difference can be positive (meaning you scored more than your opponents), negative (meaning you conceded more goals than you scored) or zero (meaning you scored the same amount as your opponents). In some competitions, a higher goal difference is used to determine which team advances in the tournament.
