Hogwash is a term used to describe something that is considered nonsense, foolishness or rubbish. It can also refer to an argument or claim that is seen as being false or without merit. The origin of this phrase comes from the practice of cleaning out pig pens by throwing dirty water over them - any muddy water that was left afterwards would be referred to as "hogwash".
