A hotline is a dedicated telephone line that connects two parties directly to each other, without having to go through an operator or receptionist. It can also refer to a direct communication channel between two organizations or governments for urgent and confidential matters. The term comes from the early days of telecommunications when calls were manually connected by operators who would use a "hot" switch to connect the lines, hence the name hotline.
