Hotmail is a free web-based email service that was launched in 1996 by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia. The name Hotmail comes from an abbreviation of HoTMaiL, which stands for HyperText Mail. It is now known as Outlook mail after Microsoft acquired it in 1997.
