Definition of «ideal base»

An ideal base is a substance that, when dissolved in water or other solvents, produces an acidic solution. It is also known as a Lewis Base because it accepts electron pairs from another molecule (the Lewis Acid). The concept of the ideal base was first introduced by Brønsted and Lowry to describe the behavior of certain chemical species that donate a pair of electrons to a proton, resulting in the formation of water or other neutral compounds. Examples of ideal bases include hydroxide ions (OH-) and ammonia (NH3).
