The plain or layman's meaning of the word immune is to be protected from something, especially a disease. It can also mean being resistant or tolerant to an allergen or substance that causes an allergic reaction in most people. In other words, when someone is said to have immunity against a particular thing, it means they are less likely to suffer the consequences of exposure to such things as compared to others who do not possess this immunity.
