Definition of «knee joint»

The knee joint is a hinge-like structure located at the junction between the femur (thigh bone), tibia and fibula (lower leg bones) and patella (kneecap). It allows for flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and rotation of the lower limb. The knee joint is surrounded by a fibrous membrane called the synovial capsule which contains synovial fluid that lubricates the joint to facilitate smooth movement.
