A loading dose is a large initial amount of medication or treatment that is administered to a patient at the beginning of their therapy, in order to quickly bring their levels up to an effective therapeutic level. This can be particularly important for drugs with short half-lives, which may not have enough time to reach therapeutic levels through regular dosing alone. The loading dose is usually followed by a maintenance dose schedule to keep the patient at the desired therapeutic level.
