Definition of «longline»

A longline is a type of fishing line that can be several miles in length, used to catch large fish such as tuna and swordfish. The baited hooks are attached at regular intervals along the main line, with branch lines extending outwards from there. Longlining involves setting the main line vertically in the water column, usually near surface or midwater temperature breaks where fish tend to congregate.
