The term Mexico has two possible origins. The first is from the Nahuatl language, where “Mexica” means “people who speak with their hands”, referring to the Aztecs who once inhabited the area. Another theory suggests that it comes from the word "Mextli" which was a god of war and one of the principal gods in the pantheon of the Aztec Empire, whose name meant "Lord of the Center".
In any case, when Hernán Cortés arrived to the region in 1519, he found that the people called themselves “Mexica” or “Mechoacan”, so it is possible that the term Mexico comes from a combination of these two names.
