Middlesex is a historical county in England, located in the southeast part of the island. It was originally formed as an administrative area by the Saxons and later became one of the Home Counties. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "Middle Saxony," which refers to the region's location between the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex during the early Middle Ages. In modern times, Middlesex has been divided into several London boroughs such as Hounslow, Richmond upon Thames, Ealing, Barnet, Enfield, Haringey, Camden, Islington, Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, and the City of London.
