Parasympathetic refers to a part of the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for regulating bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion and respiration. It works in contrast with the sympathetic nervous system which controls our fight or flight response. When we are under stress, the sympathetic system takes over while the parasympathetic system helps us to relax and recover from stress.
