A playable character is a character in a video game, role-playing game or an adventure game that can be controlled and manipulated by the player. The player takes on the role of this character and directs its actions within the game world. This term usually refers to characters that have unique abilities, skills, and attributes which make them distinct from non-player characters (NPCs) who do not have control given to players. Playable characters often have a backstory, personality traits, and may evolve throughout the game as they gain experience or level up.
