Prodromal labor refers to the early stages of labor that occur before active contractions begin. It is characterized by mild uterine contractions, cervical dilation and effacement, and other pre-labor symptoms such as low back pain, menstrual-like cramps, and increased vaginal discharge. Prodromal labor can last for several days or even weeks before active labor begins, and it is often accompanied by Braxton Hicks contractions that are not strong enough to dilate the cervix. While prodromal labor can be uncomfortable and inconvenient for expectant mothers, it does not always lead to full-term delivery, as many cases eventually resolve without further complications.
