Psychedelic refers to a category of drugs that alter perception, thoughts and feelings. These substances often produce vivid visual hallucinations and distortions in time and space, resulting in what is commonly referred to as a “trip.” Psychedelics are derived from natural sources such as plants or synthesized in the laboratory, and include well-known drugs like LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms) and mescaline (derived from the peyote cactus). The term “psychedelic” was coined by British psychiatrist Humphry Osmond in 1956, combining the Greek words for mind (psyche) and manifestation or visible (delos), to describe the experience of using these substances.
