Definition of «rarefaction»

Rarefaction refers to a decrease in pressure, density or other physical quantities. In physics, it is the opposite process of compression where gases are allowed to expand into an empty space and their pressure decreases. This phenomenon occurs when there is a sudden release of energy that causes particles to move apart from each other creating low-pressure areas. Rarefaction waves travel faster than sound in certain conditions, such as when the medium expands rapidly.
