The term "reasonable person" is a legal concept used to describe an imaginary individual who exercises average care, skill and judgment in similar circumstances. In lawsuits involving negligence or other torts (civil wrongs), the standard of reasonable person is often used as a benchmark for determining whether someone acted responsibly or not. For example, if a driver fails to use due caution while operating their vehicle and causes an accident resulting in injury, a court may consider how another "reasonable person" would have behaved under similar circumstances when deciding liability. The concept of reasonable person is also used in contract law to determine what can be considered as fair agreement between two parties.
