Definition of «ringer»

A ringer is someone or something that is not what it appears to be, often used in a positive sense to describe an unexpectedly skilled or talented person or team. It can also refer to a fake or impostor, but this usage is more negative. The term comes from the practice of using a substitute player during a sports game, who wears a different color jersey than the rest of the team so that they stand out and are easily recognizable as an additional player.
