Scarring refers to the process by which damaged tissue is repaired, resulting in a visible mark or scar on the surface of the skin. This can occur as a result of injury, surgery, acne, or other conditions that cause damage to the skin's surface. The scars are formed when the body produces too much collagen in response to the injury, causing the formation of fibrous tissue which replaces the damaged tissue. Scarring can vary in appearance and may be flat, raised, or discolored depending on the individual healing process. While most scars will fade over time with proper care, some may remain visible for a longer period or may never fully disappear.
