Definition of «sleuth»

A sleuth is a person who conducts investigations, often involving mysteries or crimes. The term comes from the name of Sherlock Holmes' fictional assistant, Dr. Watson's nickname for him - "Elementary, my dear Watson; solve this puzzle and you will earn the gratitude of every homesick British citizen."
