Sunglasses are a form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight and high-energy visible light from damaging or discomforting the eyes. They often have darkened lenses that can filter out most of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, as well as a significant portion of its visible light spectrum. Sunglasses are meant to be worn in bright daylight conditions, such as when walking outside or driving a car on a sunny day. They can also serve cosmetic and fashion purposes by making the wearer's eyes more noticeable with their use of shading.
