A temper tantrum is a term used to describe an outburst or display of anger, frustration and/or disappointment in young children. It usually involves crying, screaming, kicking, hitting or other forms of physical or verbal aggression as the child expresses their feelings of discomfort or dissatisfaction with a situation. Temper tantrums are common during early childhood development when children lack the ability to regulate their emotions and often occur in response to stressors such as being tired, hungry, overwhelmed or feeling ignored by caregivers. As children grow older, temper tantrums usually decrease in frequency and intensity as they develop better coping skills and are able to express themselves more effectively.
