Definition of «thunderstorm»

A thunderstorm is a type of storm that produces lightning and thunder. It occurs when warm, moist air rises rapidly into cold, dry air, causing water droplets to condense around particles in the atmosphere, forming clouds. As the warm air continues to rise, it creates an updraft which can cause the formation of large cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds produce heavy rain and sometimes hail, as well as strong winds and lightning. Thunderstorms are common all over the world but are most frequent in tropical regions where there is high humidity and warm temperatures. They usually last for a short period of time, but can be dangerous if people do not take proper precautions to stay safe during the storm.
