To become a red giant means that a star has exhausted its nuclear fuel and is expanding, becoming much larger in size. As a result of this expansion, the star's outer layers become cooler and redder, hence the term "red giant." This phase is typically preceded by the star shedding its outer layers as a planetary nebula, leaving behind a dense core that will eventually become a white dwarf.
