Video playback refers to the process of displaying a video file on a device such as a computer, smartphone or television. During this process, the video data is read from the storage medium (such as a hard drive or memory card) and decoded by the device's hardware in order to be displayed on the screen. The playback can either occur live, meaning that it plays continuously as long as there is enough data available, or it can be paused, rewound, fast-forwarded, or played back frame by frame. Video playback also allows for various settings such as adjusting volume levels and changing the display resolution to improve picture quality.
