A vizier is a high-ranking political advisor or minister in an Arab, Persian, Turkish, or Islamic context. The term comes from the Old French visier, which means “viewing” or “seeing,” and originally referred to a person who stood beside the king or ruler to help them see better during ceremonies or processions. Over time, however, the role of the vizier evolved into that of an important political advisor and sometimes even a regent in charge of governing on behalf of the monarch. In Islamic societies, the vizier often held significant power as the head of government and was responsible for managing state affairs, overseeing justice, and coordinating military campaigns.
