A wash sale is a transaction in which an investor sells shares of a stock at a loss, but then repurchases the same or similar security shortly thereafter. This type of transaction is often used as a tax strategy to offset capital gains from other sales. However, the IRS has rules that limit the ability to claim a loss on wash sale transactions.
