A wellie is a type of shoe that covers the foot and ankle, typically made from rubber or waterproof leather with a thick sole designed to keep out water and mud. The name comes from the fact that these shoes were originally designed for people who had to wade through water or mud (such as in farming or fishing), hence the term "wellington" boots, which later became shortened to wellie.
