A winger is a position in football (soccer) that involves playing on either wing, or side, of the pitch. The primary role of a winger is to provide width and speed down the flanks, crossing the ball into the penalty area for teammates to score goals. Wingers are also expected to track back and help defend when their team doesn't have possession of the ball.
