The Menil Collection is renowned primarily for its surrealist and modern
art, but a cache of works by old masters of the
15th - 18th
centuries caught director Joseph Helfenstein's eye.
His eclectic style is the result of unified influences drawn from
15th century German maps, medieval Persian miniature as well as contemporary street - and graffiti -
art.

The two cornerstones of its collection are the works dating from the
15th and 16th
centuries, on one side, and artworks from the 19th
century to the 21st, on the other, with the ensemble of the latter making it one of the most significant collections of contemporary
art in Europe.
Mary's annunciation, or the flagellation, baptism, and resurrection of Christ; these are some of the narrated events that seamlessly merge with an
art - historical framework of
15th century painting's perspectival studies of figures in space.
