The collection of American Impressionism and later
19th century art is equally distinguished, including major works by Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, George Inness and Winslow Homer.

In addition to works by Van Gogh, the museum's permanent collection also contains paintings by the artist's contemporaries, notably those associated with Impressionism (1873 - 90), Post-Impressionism in France (1880 - 1900), Pointillism (c.1884 - 1900), and Post-Impressionism in Holland (c.1880 - 1920), and stages exhibitions on various aspects of
19th Century art history.
Recent exhibitions at the MMA include Rooms with a View: The Open Window in
19th Century Art, 2011; Glitter and Doom: German Portraits of the 1920s, 2006; and Max Ernst Retrospective, 2005.
