any 2D photos of the face captured by Face ID are immediately discarded after it converts the data into a mathematical form.

Algorithms such as one developed by Marios Savvides's lab at Carnegie Mellon can analyse features
of a front and side view set
of mugshots, create a 3D model
of the
face, rotate it as much as 70 degrees to match the angle
of the
face in the
photo, and then match the new
2D image with a fairly high degree
of accuracy.
If it can map your
face and other objects in a scene, it can measure all kinds
of data that just wouldn't be an option with
2D photos.
I also decided to test my
2D to 3D model on an earlier image I had created
of my composite
face based on every Facebook
photo I've been tagged in.
An even more recent example is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, but it can be deceived by a
2D photo of the registered user's
face.
