7th generation lasted a lot longer than the standard ~ 5 year cycle because Nintendo introduced a number of new audiences to
gaming early on and wanted to extend that for as long as possible and maximise profits by creating more software for them to buy.
During the
7th generation the rise of smartphones and renaissance in PC
gaming led to new models being introduced for games.
Indeed, it's a testament to the longevity of that
generation, both
gaming consoles, and the many successful games it produced that we're still stuck calling the 8th
generation «next - gen» — because the
7th generation hasn't entirely let go.
